Kazuo Shiraga (白髪 一雄, Shiraga Kazuo, August 12, 1924 – April 8, 2008) was a Japanese modern artist who belonged to the Gutai group of avant-garde artists. He was acknowledged internationally only after his death. In the 1940s he studied Nihonga at the Kyoto City University of Arts.

Kazuo Shiraga (1924–2008) has steadily gained historical momentum as Gutai’s biggest name. Kazuo Shiraga was born during the year of 1924, in the town of Amagasaki, an industrial city located in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. He was brought up by a kimono merchant family, a situation which placed the young boy in a very traditional setting. Shiraga soaked in the beauty of kimonos which can arguably be described as his earliest influence. Considered as pioneer of Japanese action painting, Kazuo Shiraga is the most recognized GUTAI artists in overseas. Shiraga’s creation executed by spreading paints with his feet while suspended from a rope, and his trace of action left as thick accumulation of paints on the surface are surprisingly dynamic but full of stoicism at the same time. Kazuo Shiraga is a fairly slim build with short brown hair, black eyes, and rather pale skin.
